This is Part 2 of our Beauty Blog Special: Budget beauty buys and top tips to help you be your best you!
1. THE BODY
In Part 1 of the Beauty Blog we told you about how the loss of collagen and elastin in your body as you age results in fine lines and wrinkles. This happens not just on your face, but all over your body too. Collagen Gel seems like a miracle worker as it gives you visibly younger looking skin. Made from 100% collagen it hydrates skin, smoothes wrinkles and reduces the appearance of fine lines while promoting skin elasticity. The result? Skin feels tighter, smoother and firmer. Use a gel like this one all over your body like regular moisturiser.
Your hands are prone to age spots, but there are products available that work to repair the skin and leave you with a more youthful appearance. Age Away Cream is another great helper. The Swiss based company has developed a natural based remedy combining herbs and Chinese medicine to fade away age spots and blemishes. Our top tip? Keep a moisturiser handy in your bag and keep your hands moisturised, especially during the colder months as this is when your skin is most dry. Stay hydrated, as dehydration can wreak havoc on your skin. And if you’re out in the sun don’t forget to put sunscreen on your hands – look for non-greasy formulas and massage it into your hands rather than wiping excess onto a towel.
You don’t need to pay for a manicure when you can save money doing it at home. With the right tools, you’ll have salon-perfect nails every time. Start with a good nail file, we like a good diamond nail file as this unique graphite file has a layer of finely ground diamond dust which makes it strong and resilient so you won’t need to replace it every few months. Make sure when you file your nails that you always file in one direction, starting from the edges and moving towards the top. For the most modern, manageable shape keep the nails shortish and make sure they are all the same length, round them at the sides and keep them straight at the tip. If you want to take your home manicure one step further, why not try an Electric Nail Shaping Kit. With five special shaping tools, this handy gadget sculpts shapes and polishes your nails. The result? A professional mani without leaving the house!
For a professional polish, there are a few tricks of the trade. Always shake the bottle before use so that all the ingredients and colour pigments are properly mixed. Use a nail polish holder to keep your bottle secure and prevent nasty spills and also to give you both hands free. Slide the brush against the neck of the bottle to remove excess polish before applying to your nail. You only need three strokes to cover the nail, start down the middle in a long, even stroke and then do the same on each side. The more you practice, the better you will become at doing your own manicure and polish. If the polish gets onto your skin or cuticles it can easily be removed with a nail polish corrector – the contoured felt tip precisely erases the excess polish without fuss and without ruining the rest of the nail. Experts advise you use a base coat to prevent the colour from absorbing into the nail and a topcoat to keep the colour shiny and extend the life of your mani. The hottest nail colours are similar to the colours of the season and bright colours can do so much to give your outfit an extra pop. Red is a year-round favourite, while darker colours like black reign supreme in winter and bright, sunny colours like coral are summer staples.
3. PUT YOUR BEST FOOT FORWARD
Dry, cracked, callused feet can be unsightly, let’s face it. As the warm weather quickly approaches, now is the time to say goodbye to your foot woes and hello to baby-soft feet, so you can feel confident in your summer sandals. Heel-Tastic Treatment contains natural Neem and Karanja oils and penetrates deep to aid in moisture and damage repair. The roll-on formula is non-greasy so you can continue using it throughout summer.
Once your feet are on the road to recovery it’s time to treat yourself to a pedicure – and just like the mani, this can be done at home for a fraction of the cost! Make the whole experience more relaxing by soaking your feet in a large bowl with warm water and bubble bath for 10 minutes. This also softens the skin, which makes the next step easier and more effective. When you go to a salon, they will always buff away dead skin from your feet. This is an essential step in your pedi and using a Pedi Skin Remover, you can do it yourself. The micro files gently remove the thick build up of dead skin while also polishing your feet, revealing a soft nourished layer of skin. Next use cuticle oil on each toenail and massage it in. Toenail scissors are a better tool rather than ordinary nail clippers when doing your own pedicure as the long-handled design allows you more accurate precision. The angled blades make cutting straight easier, which helps to prevent ingrown toenails and they are much stronger than regular nail scissors because your toenails are much stronger than your finger nails. You can use your manicure tools on your pedicure to sculpt, shape and buff your toes, and follow the same steps for perfectly polished nails. Ready, Pedi, Go!
