There are countless reports praising the powers of Baking Soda in our daily life. It’s heralded as a wonder of the world for its many benefits, and so we have compiled a list of our top 15 uses for this fantastic non-toxic, multi-purpose, economical product.
1. Make your teeth whiter and brighter
Dip your toothbrush with toothpaste into baking soda – it will give your teeth a clean boost.
2. Freshen your mouth
Add 1 teaspoon to half a glass of water and use to rinse your mouth – Baking Soda works to eliminate odours, not just cover them up.
3. Soak your dentures
Use Baking Soda to soak and freshen dentures as well as any other oral appliances, like retainers and mouthpieces. Create a solution using 2 teaspoons of Baking Soda and dissolve in a glass or bowl of warm water, leave to soak for a few hours. You can also brush them with Baking Soda to clean them between meals.
4. Wash your hair
Using shampoo too often can strip your hair of essential oils and leave it dull and lifeless. Try adding 1 teaspoon of Baking Soda to your shampoo bottle – it will help remove product build up, without damaging effects.
5. Clean your combs and brushes
Think about all the products you use on your hair – it is all built up on your brush and comb, and it is recommended you clean these weekly. Soak them in 3 tablespoons of Baking Soda mixed with boiling water for a few hours and then use a cotton tip dipped in Baking Soda to remove any excess build up.
6. Wash and exfoliate your face
Treat yourself to a facial scrub by making a paste consisting of 3 parts Baking Soda to 1 part water. The mild base is gentle enough to use daily – simply rub in a gentle circular motion and reveal fresh, clean, invigorated skin. It’s also a great treatment for acne prone skin.
7. Wash your hands
Soap can actually dry your skin out as it is quite harsh. Create a paste with 3 parts Baking Soda to 1 part water or add 3 parts Baking Soda to a gentle liquid hand soap – you’ll find your skin not only feels softer, but any odours hard to rid (like fish, garlic, onion, cigarettes) will be neutralised.
8. Eliminate shoe odours
Sprinkle Baking Soda into your shoes and let sit overnight, then vacuum out
9. Relieve itchy skin
To treat insect bites, make a paste out of Baking Soda and water and apply to the skin. Rubbing Baking Soda into damp skin will also ease the itch.
10. Boost laundry detergent
Adding ½ cup of Baking Soda to your laundry will make your detergent work harder – it will balance the pH in the wash and make clothes cleaner, fresher and brighter.
11. Clean your pans and mugs
To remove burned-on food from a pan pour a thick layer of Baking Soda onto the bottom of the pan and pour a small amount of water over to moisten. Leave it to soak overnight and then scrub clean. To eliminate tea and coffee stains from your mugs use 2 tablespoons of Baking Soda and boiling water, leave to soak for at least 20 minutes and the stains will simply wipe away.
12. Deodorise your fridge
Sometimes smells can linger in the fridge long after the offending items have been removed. To combat these bad smells place an open box of Baking Soda in your fridge and leave overnight – it will absorb the odours.
